They were created for the upcoming "Reading Carnival" held by Bulloch County Schools.

Winter Landscape Mural

The Winter Landscape is a collaborative STEM activity. (Actually STEAM because it includes ART!) Students were involved in different aspects of the collage mural from the beginning to completion. The first groups of students painted papers to resemble different building materials such as wood, stone, brick, shingles and more. Other groups of students began painting the background paper with tints of various colors using sponges. Some students used radial balance to paint snowflakes in the sky area, and they used many different tools such as paper and paintbrushes to experiment with different techniques to create unique snowflakes. Some students painted trees using pieces of cardboard directly onto the background paper. Then the fun really began! Students who had not painted the building materials were the first ones to cut and make collage houses out of the painted papers. Before creating their collage house, students observed may different house styles while identifying geometric shapes and observing the proportions of shapes as they related to each other. Students then glued their houses to the mural.Other students made trees and embellished the mural with many elements such as campfires, people and vehicles. The mural was finished way too quickly, and there was no more room for any more houses. So, some students drew houses and created images for a coloring book. The students were excited that selected images would be compiled into a coloring book; and the coloring book reflected the theme of the mural. Only a few coloring books were printed, but the students used their math skills to estimate the profits of printing and selling coloring books. This was a fun collaborative project. It involved creative-thinking, problem-solving, math, science, engineering and best of all .....ART!
